Take some time before going out to buy or adopt a new puppy or adult dog to ensure you're properly prepared. It is a big responsibility to provide good dog care, and there are a lot of things to think about. Here are six basic pointers to help you prepare for the arrival of your new pet.
1. Workout
All dogs require plenty of daily exercise; it's an important part of good dog care. This is relatively easy to achieve with a toy dog breed because they usually get enough exercise each day just walking from one end of the house to the other. It's a different story with a medium to large-sized dog. They require a reasonably sized fenced yard or a daily walk.
2. Canine Supplies
Here are some essential dog supplies that you should provide as soon as possible:
— Bowls for food and water
— Food
— Toys
— Brush
— I.D. tag on collar
— Leash
- Crate vs. Kennel
— Dog Bed
- Flea and Tick Treatment
- Cleaning Supplies, such as a Pooper Scooper
3. Select a Healthy Dog
Here are some general guidelines to follow when examining a litter of puppies. Examine each puppy thoroughly. If any of the dogs appear to be sick, it's probably best to look elsewhere; more than likely, the entire litter is sick.

A healthy puppy or adult dog's eyes should be bright and clear, with no mucous or discharge. Their ears will be clean and parasite-free. They must walk straight and without a limp. In addition, their coat will be free of sores and bald patches. Before adopting a dog, make sure to request any registration papers and health records.
4. Relationship
Canines are social animals that require a lot of company to be happy and healthy. If you will be gone for extended periods of time during the day, you may want to consider getting a second dog, either one of his litter mates or another compatible dog from the shelter. This is yet another example of excellent dog care.
5. Dog Education
Dogs require structure and discipline in their lives in order to be happy and healthy. As a result, you should start training your puppy or dog right away. Even an older dog, believe it or not, can be trained. Many people are unaware that dog training is an important part of dog care.
Whether you learn dog training through classes or by purchasing books and DVDs, keep in mind that your dog will not become completely obedient overnight. It's a never-ending process, with some dogs progressing faster than others. However, if you persevere and put in enough time and effort, you will eventually have a fully trained dog.
6. Pet Food
Try to feed your dog high-quality food that is appropriate for their age. Quality food may be slightly more expensive than the generic, low-cost variety, but you'll save money in the long run. Your dog will be healthier and require fewer visits to the veterinarian.
Never feed your dogs "people food" or "table scraps." It is unquestionably an example of poor dog care. I know it's difficult to resist a beseeching dog, but giving in is cruel. It causes a variety of serious health issues, including arthritis and diabetes.
